Projects
MAMA Cash funded by Mama Cash
MAMA Cash, from 2020 to 2022. This support was for WAG to conduct advocacy for human rights of women and girls with disabilities.
SRHR activities towards Adolescent Girls and youth with disabilities funded by HIVOS
HIVOS, from 2021 to 2022. The aim was to have a Stronger and more coordinated youth led civil society in Southern and East Africa that can promote address and advance ASRHR and its intersections with HIV and gender inequalities at the regional level with key focus on adolescent’s girls and boys , young women and men. In Malawi, this support was used for implementation of SRHR activities towards Adolescent Girls and youth with disabilities.
Strengthen the capacities of women and girls with disability funded by African Women Development Fund
African Women Development Fund (AWDF) from 2021 to 2023. The aim was to strengthen the capacities of women and girls with disability to be able advocate for their rights, to advocate against gender-based violence (GBV), attain economic self-reliance and to participate in decision making processes
UNITE-4-ADP project funded by EuropeAid
From 2025 to 2028 EuropeAid. The project aims at Strengthening Civil Society Regional Partnerships in favour of the ratification, domestication and implementation of the African Disability Protocol (ADP) in Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The action will work with Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) to strengthen internal governance and organisational support functions. It will also strengthen their engagement with policy and governance processes through the provision of targeted training, capacity strengthening and peer support activities. In Malawi the project is being implemented in Lilongwe and Dowa districts.
EmpowerHer project funded by Kynnysry Finland
From 2024 to 2025. The project aims to address the significant barriers that women and girls with disabilities in Malawi face in accessing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and in combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV). These barriers include discriminatory laws and policies, cultural and social norms that perpetuate stigma and exclusion, and the lack of accessible and inclusive healthcare services. The project focuses on the right-holders and duty-bearers. The right-holders of the project are women and girls with disabilities in our 3 impact areas of Kauma, Senti and Area 23, in Lilongwe district, Malawi. The duty-bearers are parents and guardians, local leaders, service providers, government officials, OPDs and CSOs and media
ATithetse Nkhanza (TN) funded by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)
From 2018 to 2020. This was a two and a half year learning and adaptation programme. The aim was to reduce the prevalence of VAWG and improve the justice system for women and girls who are survivors of violence in Malawi. Tithetse Nkhanza worked in three districts of Mangochi, Karonga and Lilongwe with WAG Disability Rights implementing its activities in Lilongwe districts.
Disability Rights Fund (DRF)
From 2022 to 2024. The objective was to advance for the rights of women and girls with disabilities in relation to United Nations Conversion on the Rights for Persons with Disabilities (UMCRPD) in connection to access to health, access to justice and decent work.
Supporting Survivors of SEAH programme funded by Social Development Direct (SDD)
Supporting Survivors of SEAH programme (S2S) model of Survivor Support Fund (SSF) by Social Development Direct (SDD) from 2022 to 2024, amounting to Euro 24,323.22. it was implemented in our impact areas of Senti, Kauma, and Area 23. The project seeked to deliver best practices for supporting survivors of VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls) and SEAH using survivor-centred approaches to address a range of financial and social barriers to survivors seeking help.
Income Generating Activities
Income Generating Activities, from 2022 to 2023. These funds were used to advance rights to health, decent work, and access to justice for women and girls with disabilities.
Building Technical Capacity (BTC) supported by (SDD)
From 2022 to 2024, amounting to Euro 30,000. The objective was to advance for the rights of women and girls with disa WAG-Disability Rights in partnership with SDDirect conducted formative research to provide a deeper understanding of violence against women with disabilities. The research was led by a women-led Organisation of People with Disabilities (OPD) and aimed to both understand the drivers, risk factors and protective factors of violence against women with disabilities, and the barriers and enablers of help-seeking specific to women with disabilities, and to provide research evidence to facilitate adaptation and improvement of programming to prevent and respond to violence against women with disabilities.
Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza (PKN) project, supported by Foreign Commonwealth Development Organization (FCDO) under the Global What works II Programme
From 2023 to 2028, amounting to Euro 4,000,000.00. This project is being implemented in Lilongwe and Balaka districts by a consortium of three women rights organizations of Women’s Legal Resources Centre (WOLREC), Girls Empowerment Network (GENET) and Human Rights of Women and Girls with disabilities (WAG Disability Rights). The overall expected impact is reduction in prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) against women and progress towards the full realization of women's human rights. The interventions being implemented under this project include Prevention ( SASA! Together and Moyo Olemekezeka), Response (Survivor Support Fund and Gender Transformative Curriculum for frontline service providers) and External Engagement and Influencing and Institutional Strengthening Interventions.
