Who We Are
WAG Disability Rights (Registered as 'Human Rights of Women and Girls with Disabilities in Malawi') is a Malawian NGO based in Lilongwe, registered in 2015. We promote and protect the rights of women and girls with disabilities across Malawi.
Women and girls with disabilities face barriers that others do not. They are more likely to experience violence and abuse. They are less likely to access healthcare, education, or justice. They are often left out of decisions that affect their lives. WAG exists to change that — through direct work with rights holders, and by changing the systems and attitudes that hold them back.
Who we work with
We work with women and girls with disabilities at community level. We also work with the people around them:
- Families and caregivers — building understanding and support at home.
- Community and traditional leaders — shifting attitudes and strengthening local accountability.
- Frontline service providers — training health workers, police, social workers, and teachers to deliver inclusive, disability-friendly services.
- Government and policymakers — advocating for laws and policies that protect and include women and girls with disabilities.
Our six programme areas
- GBV prevention — challenging harmful norms that drive violence against women and girls.
- Sexual and reproductive health rights — equipping women and girls to claim their rights.
- Advocacy and policy — pushing for systemic change at local and national level.
- Economic empowerment — connecting women and girls to savings groups and livelihoods support.
- Civic education — raising awareness of disability rights among communities and duty bearers.
- Research and evidence — generating data that guides our programmes and advocacy.
