Today, the Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza (PKN) Consortium had the honour of hosting a high-level engagement with the Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Mr Oliver Kumbambe representing the Honourable Minister of gender, to witness firsthand the progress being made in preventing and responding to intimate partner violence under the theme:
“Transforming Families, Communities and Systems: Evidence-Based Approaches to Preventing and Responding to Intimate Partner Violence.”
The event brought together government officials, consortium partners, traditional leaders, frontline service providers, community members and development partners to reflect on the impact of evidence-based interventions that are strengthening families, communities and institutions.
Testimonies were heard from families that have received social and economic empowerment through the Moyo Olemekezeka initiative and how intimate partner violence has ended among them. The Malawi Police Service, the Judiciary and Health Service providers also shared how the Gender Transformative Curriculum (GTC) has enhanced their knowledge, attitudes and professional practice. Adding on, our survivor support fund accompaniers had the privilege to explain their referral pathways and procedures and how that is bringing about change.
Furthermore, we featured community drama performances based on the SASA! methodology, delivering a powerful reminder that violence is preventable and that lasting change begins with challenging harmful social norms and promoting healthy, respectful relationships.
The remarks delivered by the Executive Directors of the PKN Consortium, alongside those from the Principal Secretary, reaffirmed the importance of collaborative partnerships between government, civil society and communities in creating sustainable solutions to end violence against women and girls.
